There is some good skiing to be found in the mid-western state of Minnesota, all within reach of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis / St. Paul.   Minneapolis is the largest city in the state, sitting beside the Mississippi River.  St. Paul is the second largest and the capital city of Minnesota.   The two cities are actually quite different from each other.

Afton Alps Ski Area

Located in Hastings, just minutes from the Twin Cities in the pretty St. Croix River Valley, this large ski and snowboard area offers 48 trails with a 350 foot vertical drop and 250+ skiable acres (8 beginner runs, 24 intermediate, 8 advanced), a snow tube park, and 18 chairlifts/3 surface lifts.  It also offers night skiing and boarding. 

 

Giants Ridge

Located in Biwabik, approx. 200 miles from the Twin Cities.  The mountain offers 35 downhill runs, 60 km of cross country trails, and a terrain park.  There is a 500 foot vertical drop, 4.5 mile longest run.  Skier levels:  25% beginner, 50% intermediate, 25% advanced.

 

Lusten Mountain

Located in Lutsen, approx. 250 miles north from the Twin Cities. This is reported to be the biggest and highest skiing in the mid-American plains state of Minnesota.   Spread over four mountains, the area offers the only Gondola in the state, Nordic ski tracks, plus boarding is allowed on all runs, and snow skates are permitted.  Add to this 60 acres of tree skiing and there is enough to keep the most avid skier or boarder happy.   Those living close to Lutsen Mountain have no need to travel to the western states to find some good winter sports fun. 

 

Welch Village

Located in Welch, approx. 37 miles from the Twin Cities, this area offers a 350 foot vertical drop, 36 runs (12 beginner, 12 intermediate, 12 advanced), a terrain park, 2 quad lifts, 1 triple, 5 doubles and one surface lift.  Boarding is permitted and skate rental is available.
