Ski South Dakota, USA

At the time of writing, Yawgoo Valley was the only ski area we could find in Rhode Island.  Reports state that at one time there were five.   However, this state – the smallest state in the Union, being approx. 38 miles wide x 47 miles long – has so much else to offer.

With approx. 400 miles of coastline, much of the focus is on water sports.  Narragansett Bay is the place where most of it happens.  Sailing is very popular, as well as fishing, cruising, kayaking and seal watching.  Waterfront dining is available just about everywhere as well as interesting historic areas worth exploring.    Newport, Rhode Island has hosted the elite America’s Cup races and you can still experience the excitement aboard a 12-metre yacht.   Aptly nicknamed ‘the Ocean State’ Rhode Island’s official name is ‘State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.’

The first permanent settlement of white people in Rhode Island was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams on land acquired from the Narragansett Indians.   It became known for its  trading by sea and farming and Providence and Newport became among the busiest New World ports.  The state has plenty of historic landmarks, including the beautiful mansions on the clifftop in Newport which were at one time the summer homes of wealthy New Yorkers and industrialists.

Many New Englanders learn to ski at Yawgoo Valley and it is well set up for learning with a ski school and rental shop.
