Ski Australia

Located in the southern hemisphere, Australia has a very dry climate and is a very popular tourist destination – for a variety of very good reasons.  However, despite the dry climate, there are mountains – and good skiing can be found in Victoria and New South Wales in the southeast part of the country, and also in Tasmania, the island located off Victoria across the Bass Strait in the SE of Australia.   For skiing enthusiasts they can have the best of both worlds, finding places to ski year-round, with Australia’s winter and ski season happening during summertime in the northern hemisphere.

Australia is a vast and fantastic place, the sixth largest country on earth, whether you go there for a visit or to live.   It has miles of beautiful sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, scenic mountains and vast deserts.  Visitors almost certainly will want to pick up some of the aboriginal art pieces, whether a didgeridoo, boomerang, jewellery or art.  Australia mines almost all of the world’s supply of opals and black opals.  They also have gold mines.  The sheep farms provide much of the world’s wool, mainly merino, and the country is also famous for being a significant exporter of beef.

From the famous Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru, in the centre of the country, to the Great Barrier Reef off Queensland, to the famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in the SE, to the ski resorts of Victoria and NSW, to Perth in western Australia (venue of the Americas’ Cup yacht race), Australia is a truly amazing and diverse place.

Many people mistakenly believe the capital city is Sydney, when in fact it is Canberra in New South Wales.  Most of the major cities and populations are centred in coastal areas such as Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide.  As most of Australia is classified as semi-arid or desert, the population is mainly concentrated in the southeast and southwestern parts of the country where the climate is more pleasant.   Australia also has some wonderful creatures to delight visitors, such as kangaroos, koalas, wombats, the platypus, crocodiles, and birds such as the emu and kookaburra.

Australia is hard to beat as a tourist destination, or as a stop off on your round-the-world trip or gap year adventure.
