Andorra

Andorra is a small principality in southwest Europe, situated in the Pyrenees mountain range between Spain and France.

Andorra is not a member of the European Union (at the time of writing), so it is especially important that visitors from within other EU countries take out comprehensive travel insurance – and not rely on the EHIC. 

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which provides free emergency healthcare for citizens of EU member states, is not valid until such time as Andorra joins the EU. 

Play it safe and always check that your travel insurance includes cover for all the activities you plan to engage in, such as skiing, summer mountain sports, river rafting, etc.  It is also important (especially in the mountains) to have travel insurance that covers emergencies involving air ambulance and emergency medical repatriation.

Catalan is the official language of Andorra, but French Castilian, Spanish and Portuguese are also spoken.  Currency is the euro (which in 2002 replaced the Spanish peseta and French franc). 

The main emergency number in Andorra is ‘112’.  You can also call 110 for Police; 116 for Medical Emergencies; and 118 for the Fire Service or Ambulance.

If you intend to drive in Andorra note that they drive on the right.  Take some time read up on the rules of the road first as they are strict, especially regarding drinking and driving. 

Be wary of excessive drinking at all times as public drunkenness is frowned upon in Andorra.  Remember also that excessive intoxication (alcohol and/or drugs) could invalidate any related claims on your travel insurance.

The capital and largest city is the historic and scenic Andorra la Vella, which also has a ski area.  Check out the interesting historic old town, museums, and the Casa de la Vall, which dates back to the1500s.

Andorra is a tax haven and popular with bargain shoppers, especially as prices are lower than in neighbouring Spain and France.

Andorra is also a popular summer mountain destination, and those seeking rejuvenation often visit for its natural hot springs and health spas.
