Latvia (Riga)Latvia is a country of many rivers, the largest of which is the Daugava. The official language is Latvian and the capital is the port city of Riga.  Latvia has been a member of the European Union and NATO since 2004.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Latvia has thousands of rivers and lakes, so is perfect for lovers of water sports and activities, including swimming, fishing, canoeing, and rafting.  Off-road and jeep tours are also popular.   During winter, Latvia also offers skiing and winter sports.  If you are ready to relax, then head for one of the many spas for some pampering.

Visit the website of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for updated travel advice as part of their ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign.  Their advice includes the following points and issues:

-As in most countries of the world, visitors should be vigilant to the possibility of street crimes, pickpockets, etc. Avoid dark streets and parks at night

-In previous years there have been issues with visitors being overcharged for drinks and with cover charges, and also issues of credit and debit card fraud.  The authorities in Riga have cracked down on these practices and the situation is believed to be much better, but exercise caution.  Many of the problems have occurred when foreign tourists visit clubs and bars in Riga.  Always be alert to the possibility of drinks being spiked.

-Use a registered taxi company and ascertain the fare before accepting the ride as there have been problems with taxi meters and inflated prices.

-Driving in Latvia, especially regarding drinking and driving.  If found to be over the limit a large fine may be imposed and even possible imprisonment.

-Consuming alcohol in public is against the law
-Carry a photocopy of your passport at all times
-Obtain a ticket for all public transport as on-the-spot fines are levied
-Passports should have a minimum of three months validity upon entry to Latvia

Read the FCO section regarding carrying money between EU Member States.  Credit cards are widely used and accepted, and there are ATMs where local currency can be withdrawn.  Currency is Latvian Lats.

Latvia is a country that has become popular for medical tourism (combining a trip with a medical or dental procedure and obtaining faster or cheaper treatment). Those considering surgery or dental treatment abroad should be aware that a typical travel insurance policy does not cover this type of medical treatment.  Travel insurance is normally only for true medical emergencies.

Note that it is a requirement for most visitors to have health insurance when visiting Latvia, which must include repatriation. If you need a visa to visit Latvia then you will need to also show proof of health insurance.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid in Latvia, but holders should not use this as a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.  Check that your travel insurance includes medical repatriation as well as all your planned activities.
